Why We Scan: The Test That Won’t Come Back “Normal”

by | Aug 2, 2026 | Pediatric Chiro Care, Chiropractor Care

If you’re a parent who has been told, “Everything looks normal,” while knowing in your heart that something still isn’t right with your child, you’re not alone. And you’re certainly not imagining it.

We hear it every week from moms and dads in our office:

“Her labs came back normal.” “We’ve tried the supplements, but nothing has really changed.” “We finally got a diagnosis, but we still don’t have any real answers.”

The truth is, if your child is struggling, the right test shouldn’t simply tell you everything is normal. It means the underlying cause hasn’t been measured yet. Most traditional testing looks for disease or damage. We look at the system that controls and coordinates every other system in the body: the nervous system.

That’s exactly why every patient at 3T Family Chiropractic begins with our Neurological INSiGHT Scans. They help us uncover what’s happening beneath the surface so we can create a care plan based on objective findings instead of guesswork.

Why the Nervous System Is the Missing Piece

Most traditional testing, including bloodwork, MRIs, and EEGs, is designed to identify disease, injury, or structural abnormalities. These tests are incredibly valuable, but they aren’t designed to measure how well your child’s nervous system is functioning from day to day. That’s an important distinction because the nervous system is the foundation that influences nearly every other system in the body.

Think of it as your child’s command center. The nervous system is made up of three interconnected branches: sensory, autonomic, and motor. Together, they coordinate everything from movement and development to digestion, sleep, behavior, emotional regulation, and the body’s response to stress. As developmental biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton has explained, the nervous system continuously interprets the environment and directs how the rest of the body responds.

The autonomic, or “automatic,” nervous system is especially important because it controls the basic functions every growing child depends on: eating, sleeping, digesting, and moving. At 3T Family Chiropractic, when we evaluate your child’s nervous system, we’re looking at how well this automatic control system is adapting and functioning, not just whether symptoms are present.

Many families come to us after investing countless hours in occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, feeding therapy, supplements, or gut-health protocols. Those approaches can all play an important role. But if the nervous system hasn’t been evaluated, there’s often a foundational piece of the puzzle that has yet to be addressed.

What Makes INSiGHT Scans Different

At 3T Family Chiropractic, Neurological INSiGHT Scans aren’t something we perform once and forget about. Every patient is scanned at the beginning of care and then rescanned approximately every 12 adjustments, allowing us to objectively measure how the nervous system is changing and adapting throughout the healing process.

These scans aren’t designed to sell care or create fear. They’re one of the most valuable tools we have for identifying what may be driving challenges such as:

  • Digestive concerns
  • Colic and reflux
  • Recurring ear infections
  • ADHD and focus challenges
  • Sensory processing difficulties
  • Hormonal and stress-related imbalances
  • And many other neurological health concerns

Rather than guessing, INSiGHT Scans measure how well the nervous system is communicating. They evaluate both the sensory pathways that bring information into the brain and the motor pathways that send signals back out to the body. When that communication becomes disrupted through patterns of subluxation and dysautonomia, the result can be chronic stress, poor adaptability, muscle tension, and decreased coordination throughout the body. Our scans help us identify those patterns so care can be customized to your child’s specific needs.

One of the reasons this matters so much is because a child’s brain and nervous system develop at an incredible pace, especially during the first few years of life. The first year alone is a period of extraordinary neurological growth. Ensuring the nervous system is developing and functioning as it should isn’t simply another milestone to track. It may be one of the most important indicators of your child’s long-term health, development, and ability to thrive.

The Three INSiGHT Scans, Explained Simply

At 3T Family Chiropractic, we use three Neurological INSiGHT Scans together because each measures a different aspect of nervous system function. Combined, they give us a complete picture of how your child’s body is adapting to stress and where support is needed most.

NeuroThermal Scan – This is often the first scan we perform, and it’s safe for everyone from newborns to adults. It measures stress within the autonomic nervous system by identifying areas where communication has become imbalanced. These patterns are commonly associated with concerns like colic, reflux, constipation, recurring ear infections, sleep challenges, immune stress, and difficulty regulating digestion.

NeuroSpinal EMG Scan – This scan evaluates muscle tone and spinal nerve activity to show how much stress the nervous system is carrying. It’s especially helpful for children experiencing ADHD, anxiety, sensory processing challenges, autism, or developmental concerns. It can reveal whether the nervous system is stuck in an overactive “fight or flight” pattern (what we sometimes call a Raging Bull), showing signs of neurological fatigue (a Drunken Bull pattern), or experiencing a combination of both. These patterns help us create a care plan tailored to your child’s unique needs.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Scan – HRV measures how adaptable and resilient the nervous system is. In other words, it tells us how well your child’s body responds to everyday physical, chemical, and emotional stress before returning to a calm, regulated state. Lower HRV is often seen in children who struggle with emotional regulation, transitions, anxiety, chronic stress, or frequent illness. As the nervous system becomes healthier and more balanced, we often see HRV improve alongside real-life changes at home.

Together, these three scans provide an objective look at how your child’s nervous system is functioning. Instead of relying solely on symptoms or guesswork, they allow us to identify underlying patterns, personalize care, and track measurable progress throughout your family’s journey at 3T Family Chiropractic.

You Deserve Answers, Not More Guesswork

If you’ve been told your child will “grow out of it,” but your instincts tell you something deeper is going on, don’t ignore that feeling. Parents know their children better than anyone. Many of the challenges we see later in childhood, including anxiety, ADHD, sensory processing difficulties, emotional dysregulation, and developmental delays, often have roots in nervous system stress that began much earlier. Colic, reflux, feeding challenges, and sleep struggles aren’t always isolated issues. They can be early signs of a nervous system that has been under stress from the very beginning.
