One day, your child is just… themselves. The next, they’re not.
Tics appear out of nowhere. OCD behaviors start taking over their day. Rage, anxiety, and separation issues can show up almost overnight. You’ve been to the pediatrician. Maybe the neurologist. Maybe even a psychiatrist. You’ve been told it’s Tourette’s, ADHD, or “just anxiety.”
But deep down, you know something bigger may be happening underneath.
That gut feeling is real. And if you’re reading this because your child’s behavior or neurological symptoms changed seemingly overnight after an illness, you’re not imagining it. You may be describing PANS or PANDAS, two conditions that can cause sudden-onset neuropsychiatric symptoms in children.
What PANS and PANDAS Actually Are
PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. PANS is the broader umbrella — it describes the same sudden-onset pattern, but can be triggered by infections other than strep.
Here’s what’s happening: the immune system, while responding to an infection like strep, can mistakenly affect healthy brain tissue. The result is a cluster of symptoms that can make it feel like your child’s personality changed overnight:
- Sudden OCD behaviors — checking, counting, extreme handwashing, fear of germs
- Motor tics (eye blinking, facial grimacing, head jerking) and vocal tics (throat clearing, grunting, word repetition)
- Emotional changes, rage, and separation anxiety
- Sensory sensitivities and developmental regression
- Changes in handwriting and a sudden drop in school performance
Nearly 1 in 200 children in the U.S. are affected by PANDAS. Most cases appear between ages 3 and 12, and many families describe the same thing: a dramatic change that seemed to happen almost overnight, often within days of an illness.
Why This Isn’t “Just” a Strep Infection
If PANDAS were simply about the bacteria, every child who gets strep would develop it. But they don’t. So why do some kids experience such a dramatic reaction while others don’t?
This is where we look at a child’s own Perfect Storm — a layered set of vulnerabilities and stressors that may have been building long before the strep infection ever showed up:
- Genetic vulnerability. Some children may be more susceptible to an immune response like this than others.
- Environmental stressors. Toxin exposure, frequent antibiotic use, and birth-related stress can all add to the overall load on a child’s system.
- Timing and frequency. How often and when a child experiences strep may play a role alongside the infection itself.
- A nervous system that was already dysregulated. Some children may show signs of nervous system dysregulation or dysautonomia before the strep infection ever hits.
In other words: the strep infection may be the spark. But for some kids, there may already be a neurological foundation under significant stress — which may help explain why the reaction can be so intense, and why it can feel like a rollercoaster that never quite stops.
Why So Many Families Feel Stuck
If you’ve done “all the things” and still feel like you’re going in circles, you’re not failing your child. You’re running into the limitations of treating the symptoms without looking deeper at what may be contributing to them.
- Antibiotics can target bacterial infections, but they don’t address the broader neurological picture. And research suggests that a significant percentage of pediatric antibiotic prescriptions may be unnecessary.
- CBT and behavioral therapy can give children valuable tools for coping with symptoms, but they aren’t specifically designed to address nervous system regulation.
- Anti-inflammatory diets, detox protocols, and supplements can be helpful pieces of the puzzle, but they may not address the full picture on their own.
- IVIG and plasmapheresis may be considered in more severe cases, but they are intensive treatments with risks and trade-offs that families need to carefully weigh with their medical team.
Every one of these approaches can have a place. But when underlying nervous system dysregulation, subluxation, and dysautonomia aren’t being addressed, many families find themselves back on the same rollercoaster — new label, new treatment, same underlying pattern.
A Different Starting Point: Looking at the Nervous System
This is where Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care enters the picture — not as a replacement for your child’s medical team, but as another layer of care that is often overlooked.
The approach starts with a different question: not “how do we suppress this symptom?” but “what is the nervous system’s capacity to regulate, adapt, respond to stress, and heal?”
A few things are important to understand:
- Subluxation is about neurological interference — not simply a misaligned bone. It can affect how the nervous system communicates with and coordinates the rest of the body.
- We don’t guess, we test. INSiGHT Scans — technology developed by the Chiropractic Leadership Alliance — measure things like autonomic function, muscle tension, and heart rate variability, giving us an objective picture of how your child’s nervous system is functioning rather than relying on symptoms alone.
- Gentle, specific adjustments are used to support the neurospinal system and its ability to regulate and adapt.
- This works alongside your child’s medical, integrative, and therapy team — not against it. Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care does not seek to diagnose, treat, or cure PANS or PANDAS. Instead, it focuses on supporting the nervous system and your child’s overall capacity to regulate, adapt, and heal.
Caleb’s Story
Every family’s path looks different, but here’s one family’s experience.
In the middle of 4th grade, Caleb’s family watched their once-lively boy struggle with major motor tics, mood swings, and difficulty focusing. Part of the picture was a PANDAS diagnosis. Neurologists later added a Tourette’s label. Psychiatry tried medications for anxiety and ADHD, but his family wasn’t seeing the changes they had hoped for. His grades dropped, and he began feeling like an outcast at school.
On a friend’s recommendation, his family discovered Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care. With a customized care plan focused on his nervous system, Caleb’s family reported a 90% reduction in his tics, improvements in his grades, and a more stable mood. His mom also noticed that he was easier to redirect and more connected with his peers.
This is Caleb’s story. Every child’s nervous system, history, and circumstances are different, and individual results vary. But his family’s experience offers a glimpse of what can happen when we look beyond the symptoms and support the nervous system as part of a bigger picture.
Your Child Doesn’t Need Another Label. They Need Answers.
If your child is caught on the PANDAS rollercoaster — one flare after another, one label after another, one medication after another — there may be another layer worth exploring that most families never hear about.
You don’t have to choose between your child’s medical care and looking deeper. You can do both. If you’re ready to take a closer look at your child’s nervous system, reach out to 3T Family Chiropractic today to schedule a nervous system assessment. If you are not local to us, check out the PX Docs directory to find an office near you.
Your child is more than a diagnosis or a collection of symptoms. And if you’ve made it this far, you’re already asking an important question: What else could be going on underneath the surface?
