What is Subluxation? And Why It Might Be the Missing Link Behind Your Child’s Health Challenges

There are several layers to it, and each one impacts your child’s ability to heal, regulate, and function well:

Structural Stress and Misalignment –  A shift or stress pattern develops within the NeuroSpinal System. While the spine is involved, the bigger issue is how that stress impacts the nervous system itself.

Restricted Motion and Tension – Areas of the spine and surrounding muscles can become stuck, tight, and less adaptable. When the body loses healthy movement and flexibility, it also loses something called proprioception – important sensory input that the brain depends on for coordination, regulation, and balance.

Your child’s brain is constantly receiving information from the body every second of every day. One of the most important types of input is called proprioception.

Proprioception is essentially the body’s internal awareness system. It helps the brain understand:

  • where the body is in space
  • how to coordinate movement

This sensory input comes from the muscles, joints, ligaments, and connective tissues throughout the body. Here is where subluxation begins to create problems.

When areas of the spine and nervous system become stuck, restricted, and stressed, the body stops sending healthy proprioceptive input to the brain. As that calming, organizing input decreases, the brain starts receiving more stress-based signals instead.

Those stress signals are known as nociception — the nervous system’s way of detecting irritation, tension, threat, and danger.

You can think of it like a seesaw: Less “safe and regulated” input. More “stress and alert” input. The brain never stops receiving messages from the body. But when subluxation and neurological stress are present, the quality of those messages changes dramatically.

Translation: your child’s brain is being told, every second of every day, that the body is under threat. Even when it isn’t.

Over time, the nervous system can become stuck in a chronic state of tension and survival mode. This is why so many children struggle with things like emotional dysregulation, sensory overwhelm, meltdowns, poor sleep, chronic stress, immune challenges, focus issues, and anxiety patterns.

These challenges are often not simply behavioral issues or personality traits. Many times, they are signs of a nervous system that has been overwhelmed, stressed, and stuck in protective mode for far too long.

Why the Brainstem and Upper Neck Matter So Much

To truly understand why subluxation can have such a widespread impact on a child’s health, you first have to understand the role of the brainstem.

The brainstem acts like the body’s main communication and regulation center. It is constantly coordinating essential functions such as breathing, digestion, heart rate, immune responses, sleep, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and movement patterns — all day, every day, without pause.

The upper neck region, especially the top bones of the neck, plays a major role in protecting and supporting this area. It is also one of the most neurologically dense regions in the entire body, filled with important sensory receptors that constantly send information back to the brain.

This area is closely connected to the vagus nerve, which plays a huge role in calming and regulating the nervous system. The vagus nerve helps the body shift out of stress mode and into a state where healing, digestion, immune balance, emotional regulation, and rest can occur more efficiently.

The brainstem helps regulate three major areas of development and function:

  • Regulation – Sleep, digestion, immune function, breathing patterns, emotional balance, and stress resilience
  • Sensory Processing – Filtering sensory input, adapting to the environment, managing overwhelm, and distinguishing safety from stress
  • Motor Development – Coordination, posture, muscle tone, reflex integration, speech motor planning, and developmental milestones

This is one reason why neurological stress and subluxation can show up so differently from child to child. One child may struggle with focus and emotional regulation, while another experiences digestive issues, sensory overload, chronic tension, sleep challenges, or developmental delays. The symptoms may look different on the surface, but the underlying nervous system stress patterns are often very similar.

When the upper neck and brainstem region are under chronic stress, the nervous system can lose some of its ability to properly regulate and adapt. The body may stay stuck in a heightened stress response, the immune system can become more reactive, and the brain may have a harder time accurately processing and responding to what is happening internally and externally.

How Subluxation Builds Over Time: The Perfect Storm

This is the question parents always ask: “How did my child end up here?”

For most families, it is not one single event. It is a combination of stressors that build over time and gradually overwhelm the nervous system. We often refer to this pattern as The Perfect Storm.

Usually, there are several layers involved.

Layer 1: Stress During Pregnancy

A baby’s nervous system begins developing long before birth, and the prenatal environment plays a major role in shaping that development.

During pregnancy, both physical and emotional stress can influence the developing nervous system. Maternal stress hormones, like cortisol, are capable of affecting the baby’s stress response system while it is still forming. This is not about blame or guilt for moms. Layer 3: The Modern Environmental Stress Load 

Today’s children are growing up in a world filled with more neurological and physiological stress than ever before.

Processed foods, environmental toxins, chronic inflammation, disrupted sleep patterns, screen overload, immune stress, gut health challenges, and constant overstimulation all place additional pressure on a child’s nervous system.

While genetics may influence susceptibility, genetics alone cannot explain the dramatic rise in challenges like anxiety, ADHD, sensory processing struggles, chronic immune issues, sleep dysregulation, and other neurological stress-related conditions.

The environment matters. The nervous system matters. And over time, the stress load can begin to exceed the body’s ability to adapt.

One of the simplest ways to picture this is with the “bucket” analogy.

Every child has a certain capacity to handle stress. As stressors accumulate, the bucket gradually fills. Eventually, when the nervous system becomes overloaded, symptoms begin spilling out in different ways — emotionally, physically, behaviorally, developmentally, or immunologically.

The goal is not simply to chase symptoms one by one. The goal is to help the nervous system become more adaptable, resilient, and capable of handling life’s stressors more effectively.

Once you understand the nervous system piece, you start recognizing the pattern almost immediately.

Many of these kids are living in a constant state of internal stress and imbalance. Their nervous systems are stuck between overdrive and exhaustion at the same time, almost like they have one foot pressing the gas pedal while the other is trying to hit the brakes. This neurological imbalance, often referred to as dysautonomia, creates a state where the body struggles to regulate, adapt, and recover properly.

Physically, this can show up as colic, reflux, constipation, chronic ear infections, poor sleep, frequent illness, low or high muscle tone, toe walking, W-sitting, or coordination challenges.

For some children, the signs are more sensory-related, including sensory seeking or avoiding behaviors, meltdowns during overstimulation, difficulty filtering environmental input, or nervous systems that seem constantly too reactive or not reactive enough.

For other children, the challenges appear more brain-based and developmental. Parents may notice speech delays, anxiety, focus and attention struggles, emotional dysregulation, repetitive movements, stimming, or tics. 

While the symptoms may look very different from child to child, the underlying theme is often the same: a nervous system that is overwhelmed and struggling to stay balanced.

Over time, chronic neurological stress tends to follow a predictable pattern. The nervous system first becomes stuck in stress mode and heightened sympathetic activity. Eventually, the body begins struggling to regulate emotionally, physically, and neurologically. If that stress continues long enough, the system can move toward exhaustion, which is often when parents begin noticing setbacks, plateaus, or regression after periods of progress.
