You’ve been to the speech evaluations. You’ve sat outside the therapy room week after week, month after month. You’ve practiced sounds at home, worked through flashcards, repeated exercises, and tried every cueing strategy the therapist recommended.
And your child still struggles to get the words out.
Not because they don’t want to. Not because they aren’t trying. Your child may be working harder than anyone realizes just to get those words out.
Then came the diagnosis: childhood apraxia of speech. Along with it came answers that may have left you with even more questions. There’s no known cause. Progress can take time. Continue speech therapy and explore other ways to help your child communicate.
If you’ve experienced that moment, you’re not alone. At 3T Family Chiropractic, we understand how overwhelming it can feel when you’re doing everything you can to help your child communicate, yet progress remains difficult. And there’s another piece of the conversation we want parents to understand:
Childhood apraxia of speech is not a mouth problem. It’s not a muscle problem. It’s a signal problem.
Once you understand where that signal is breaking down, a whole new set of options opens up for your child.
Apraxia Is a Motor Planning Challenge First
Here’s something that may bring you real comfort: your child’s brain knows exactly what it wants to say.
The muscles that produce speech aren’t weak. The breakdown happens in the planning and sequencing of the movements that make speech possible.
Think about everything that has to happen for a single word to come out. The brain has to coordinate the lips, tongue, jaw, palate, and breath in precise order, at speed, every single time. When that sequencing signal doesn’t transmit cleanly, the words come out scrambled, effortful, or not at all.
So when you see your child straining to say something they clearly understand, you’re seeing a child whose message is getting lost somewhere between the brain and the body. That’s not a lack of effort or intelligence. It’s interference on the line.
The Story Behind an Apraxia Diagnosis
Here’s a pattern we see at 3T Family Chiropractic over and over again:
A family comes in with an apraxia diagnosis. We sit down to take a full case history, and we start at the very beginning. Not preschool. Not the first missed milestone. The pregnancy and the birth.
So often, the same details come up:
- A long or stalled labor
- A breech presentation
- A vacuum extraction or forceps
- A C-section, planned or emergency
Then the early years fill in the rest of the picture:
- Colic or reflux
- Problems with latching
- Constipation
- Recurring ear infections and round after round of antibiotics
- Torticollis or a strong head-turning preference
- Skipped or awkward crawling
Each of those things was looked at on its own. Nobody ever connected them into one story.
Speech wasn’t the first sign. It was just the loudest one.
If you’re reading that list and recognizing your child in it, take a deep breath. This isn’t about blame. Most of these things were out of your control, and many of them happened while you were doing everything you could to care for your baby. Seeing the pattern simply gives you a clearer place to start.
The Perfect Storm Sequence That Starts It All
At 3T Family Chiropractic, we call the sequence of stressors that sets the stage for challenges like apraxia the Perfect Storm. It begins long before the first missed word and unfolds in three stages:
- Prenatal stress and maternal health. Stress hormones can cross the placenta during the most sensitive window of development.
- Birth trauma and birth interventions. This is where clinicians across speech therapy, occupational therapy, and pediatric chiropractic most consistently see a link to speech conditions.
- Early childhood toxic load. This includes antibiotics, medications, and environmental exposures.
Each stage stacks on the one before it, and together they can leave a child’s nervous system stuck in stress mode, making it harder for clean signals to get where they need to go.
Neurological Interference: Subluxation and the Vagus Nerve
Subluxation is a neurological dysfunction with three parts:
- Misalignment within the neurospinal system
- Fixation and restricted motion in those segments
- The neurological interference that results when altered movement disrupts sensory input to the brain
That third part matters most. Reduced movement means reduced quality information heading up into the brainstem, and the brainstem has a huge job.
It manages three big domains all at once:
- Regulation: sleep, digestion, immune function, heart rate, and breathing
- Sensory processing: filtering input and deciding what’s a threat and what’s safe
- Motor and development: muscle tone, reflexes, postural control, and speech motor planning itself
Birth trauma is known to interfere with the vagus nerve, which helps control and coordinate speech alongside everything else it manages. Upper cervical tension and dysautonomia (when the nervous system’s gas pedal is stuck down and the brake pedal barely responds) sit right on top of the region that most influences how speech is processed and integrated.
In other words, the very area of the nervous system your child needs most for speech may be the area under the most stress.
Foundation Before Function: Why Healing Order Matters
Please hear this clearly: speech therapy is genuinely excellent. It teaches children how to work around the challenges apraxia creates, and your child’s speech therapist is an important part of their team.
But therapy asks the higher levels of the brain to perform while the foundation underneath may still be unstable.
We like to call this the batting order. You can have all the right players, but if they’re in the wrong lineup, you won’t win the game.
Here’s the lineup that works:
- The nervous system comes first
- The motor system comes next
- Gut and immune health follow
- Brain-based therapies like speech and occupational therapy build on top
When those pieces run in the right order, each one becomes more effective. That’s why so many families find that their speech therapist notices a change before they do.
You don’t have to choose between therapy and a foundational approach. You get to give everything you’re already doing a stronger place to land.
How 3T Family Chiropractic Can Help
Every child’s story is different, so we never guess. We start with a full clinical process, beginning with your child’s case history and especially their birth history.
Then we run INSiGHT Scans, developed by the Chiropractic Leadership Alliance (CLA):
- The neuroTHERMAL scan shows us dysautonomia in the upper cervical region.
- The NeuroSpinal EMG scan shows us tension and asymmetry in the area that houses the nerves and muscles responsible for forming and expressing speech.
- The HRV scan measures heart rate variability, giving us insight into how your child’s body responds and adapts to stress.
It’s important to be clear: this technology does not diagnose medical conditions, and Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care is not a treatment or cure for apraxia of speech or any other condition. Instead, INSiGHT Scans help us track down the root cause of nervous system dysfunction and dysregulation so we can build a customized care plan and adjusting protocol to help shift your child’s nervous system back toward balance, regulation, and resilience.
Your Child Has So Much More to Say
Your child isn’t stubborn. Your child isn’t lazy. And your child is not out of options.
Their nervous system has been stuck in stress mode, and the signal that carries speech has been fighting through interference this whole time. Every sound they’ve worked for, every word they’ve pushed through, has been an act of incredible effort.
You know your child. You’ve seen how much is inside them, waiting to come out. Trust that, and keep advocating. You’re exactly the person they need in their corner.
Take the Next Step
Schedule a consultation at 3T Family Chiropractic. We’ll sit down together, go through your child’s full history, and find out whether subluxation and nervous system interference are part of what’s been holding your child back.
